Family Newsletter 4/7/25

Hello Maverick Families,

Thank you to the McClure PTSA, and current and future families for your support at the recent auction. A fun night for a great cause. We appreciate you!

End of Quarter

The end of Quarter 3 is this week. Please speak with your student to confirm all assignments and assessments are up to date. Ask them to open the Source and show you😊.  Students should contact teachers by email or in person to find out how to make up existing work or retake assessments. Advisory teachers have been supporting students with end of quarter grade checks over recent weeks.

Construction Updates at McClure

Replacement of Portable Classrooms

We received notice late on Friday that the portables will be demolished this week (4/7 – 4/11) and then new portables installed the week after spring break (4/21 – 4/25).  This work was originally scheduled for May during SBA testing, so we appreciate the reschedule for McClure students. Much of the school parking lot is blocked by a construction fence this week. We suggest avoiding the parking lot and dropping your student on 2nd Avenue if you are coming to McClure. Thank you.

Building construction

The McClure front entry, exterior doors, and gym ceiling will undergo safety improvements this summer. The front façade will be modified to include a vestibule and front office remodel. This work is scheduled to start right after the June 19th holiday and will continue throughout the summer. More info to come.

e-Scooters

We’re seeing an increase of students riding e-scooters without helmets, with helmets that are unclipped, multiple young adults on one scooter, and young adults riding through stops signs and across traffic without noticing oncoming traffic. We care about the safety of all students. Please have a conversation with your student if they have a scooter, rent scooters or have friends that bring scooters to school.

Students should not ride e-scooters, e-bikes, or bikes on the McClure campus including the courtyard and surrounding sidewalks.

KUOW article on e-scooters in Seattle:

At Harborview’s Injury Prevention and Research Center, pediatrician Beth Ebel said few of the patients she sees with scooter injuries wore a helmet. While the absolute risk of a serious crash is low, the stakes of going helmetless are high, she said.

Hitting a car or a pothole with a scooter can flip the rider over the handlebars, “so you have rotational energy right onto your head,” Ebel said.

“That movement and sudden stop can stretch and snap the axons, or the little connections between brain cells, and can cause profound cognitive injury,” she said. “If you fall on a scooter and break your arm, we can fix your broken arm. But when you have a head injury, it is not something that we fix. We just keep the damage from getting worse.”

We care about our students! Have an enjoyable week off.

Go Mavs!
