Family Newsletter 6/10/24

Hello,

In my last few days here at McClure Middle School, I do want to reiterate that it has been my honor to serve this school and community. It is certainly bittersweet to leave but, again, it is time. I wish you and your family a fantastic summer and know that your kids are well-prepared for their next school year and that our amazing staff will be here to receive them in the fall.  Though you’ll probably get a few more updates from me before the last day, this is likely the last formal family newsletter of my career – I’ll kind of miss it…I like sharing news with you and building community and connection!

Take care everyone!

And now…some important updates and reminders. 😊

Next Year’s Class Schedule:

After a few years of trying all kinds of different schedule options with the goal of augmenting project-based learning and relationships, providing more coaching and feedback to kids and reducing interruptions in our learning environments, our staff has voted to return to the 6-period day model (and maintain Advisory) for the 2024-25 school year. One big reason for this is that Seattle Public Schools is adopting more and more aligned curriculum that is specifically designed around a 50-55-minute class period. Also, we know that for some disciplines, our block periods are just too long developmentally for our young students. Our teachers lamented that they will miss opportunities to give one on one time to all or their students during a block period and to have sacred time to provide individualized feedback during a longer class period. That said, we are up for the challenge of making every second count in each and every class period at McClure Middle School!

Staff also voted to continue with our Advisory model for the 2024-25 school year.  There will likely be a few advisories affected by staff attrition or the need for balancing our advisories so they have equitable student numbers. But…for the most part, students will loop up with their established advisors.
