Family Newsletter 1/13/23

Hello Maverick families and Happy New Year!

As you know, this weekend we honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  We acknowledge that Monday is a day for service and reflection so I offer this list of events and volunteer opportunities should your family desire to participate:

some of the events honoring Dr. King.

Social Media Presentation, Wednesday, January 25th, 6:00-7:30– Please go to this!!

Families – I think I’ve been pretty transparent about my observations about and research into how social media continues to have an incredibly negative effect on our youth.  We are a cell-phone-free school for a reason and the results have been profound in terms of engagement, positive social interactions and mental health within the building on the daily.  That said, we have very little control over digital “goings-on” outside of the school day and the level of unkindness, distraction, and addiction that occurs outside of the building and the school day definitely negatively impacts all of our kids in one way or another. It is very challenging for the building to unravel the negative effects of social media as they present themselves in the school.  And there are many!

The good news is that there are tools that parents can and should use to ensure their kids are safe and to shut down the negativity and addictive pull of social media.  (Remember, these platforms were intentionally created to be addictive to children and adolescents and many of the creators, themselves, do not allow their own children to use them).

So…

Our wonderful PTSA is on it!! They have Kennedy Markulec from Anchor Light Therapy Collective coming to speak with us about middle-school aged children and social media.   Please RSVP using this form and submit your questions ahead of time! Drop-ins welcome too!

Canned Food Drive:

About 1 in every 11 households struggle to put food on the table.

McClure’s AVID elective class is hoping to lower this number to zero by hosting a food drive for Northwest Harvest. Our school goal is to collect and donate at least 2000 items. Families can help by donating canned or nonperishable foods from January 9th to 20th.

Possible donations include:

  • Canned protein (tuna, chicken, beans)
  • Peanut butter (plastic jars are preferred)
  • Canned fruit (low sugar)
  • Canned vegetables (low sodium)
  • Rice (white or brown)  o   Whole grain pastas
  • Boxed or canned meals with low salt, sugar, and saturated fats
  • Shelf-stable milk or dairy alternatives
  • Baby formula or canned milk
  • Baby food
  • Infant cereal
  • Baby diapers

Students can bring donations to their Advisory classes.

Thank you in advance for your support.
