Happy (almost) summer to all of our McClure families!

A few quick notes before we head off to our summer (finally!)

    • Advisories – 2016-17!!

First, I am delighted to report to you that our McClure staff has formally voted to include Advisories as part of our weekly schedule so that we can further honor our devotion to the McClure mission – “…to facilitate the social, emotional and academic development of EVERY McClure student…”  Once a week, McClure students will gather in their Advisory classroom (class sizes 24 or below) with a McClure teacher to build relationships, bolster Maverick PRIDE and, most importantly learn and grow in their social/emotional development.  Students will stay with their McClure staff advisor for their entire McClure journey.  We have a strong McClure Advisory team who will be orchestrating the curriculum/lessons for the year.  This team has received training in the RULER curriculum (developed by the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence: The goal is to lead every student in the school through a scope and sequence of experiences that develop and reinforce “emotional intelligence in students” and allow us to create an authentically “safe space for students to learn and grow.” We are very excited about this opportunity to further strengthen positive, supportive relationships with students and even more positively affect our school culture as a whole!

    • Smarter Balance Assessment (SBA) scores

Just a quick note that your child’s SBA scores will be available to you in your child’s final report card for the year.  The report cards will be mailed roughly a week after the last day of school. This is amazing news since, in my 23-year experience, we have never received state assessment information before the beginning of the following school year.  Also included in students’ final report cards will be their Amplify benchmark assessment scores.  As a staff, we are still learning how to use information from these assessments (taken twice this year) to inform our practice in filling gaps in student skills and knowledge.

    • End of Year Fun Things!:

      • 8th grade promotion is Tuesday, June 21st, 6-7:00 at Ballard High School

      • 8th grade beach day is Wednesday, June 22nd (watch out Golden Gardens!!)

      • Friday, June 24th, the last day of school, students will once again be enjoying our traditional final day of awards and “field day” fun - games, ice cream and final good-byes for the school year!!

    • Final Thoughts:

Maverick families, thank you all for being a part of this exceptional community for the 2015-16 school year. Thank you to our amazing volunteers (PRIDE store, grade level parent reps, hallway and lunchroom parents/grandparents, classroom support parents, event volunteers and planners and so much more!) Thank you to our conscientious and hard-working PTSA board members for all that you do to fully understand the complicated but remarkable intricacies of our lovely middle school and provide the necessary essential supports to fill some critical gaps for our staff and students.

Also, eighth grade students and families, I wish you a fond farewell as you transition to the rigors and splendor high school.  You are SO ready!  I am very proud of this group that McClure is sending forward…best of luck to you all!!

Finally, thank you to each and every one of our McClure parents and guardians for sending us your children each and every day and your ceaseless support of their development.  Teaming as a school community is what has and will make our kids…and school…grow to even greater heights and for the 2016-17 school year’s 6th, 7th, and 8th grade families, I look forward to the next steps in this gratifying journey.

Happy summer to all of our Maverick families.

    (Go Mavs!)
