Instrumental Music

All classes meet every school day for one class period and each class continues for both semesters. All ensembles play a variety of musical styles with an emphasis on proper playing technique, music reading and interpretation. Students learn to use critical thinking and 21st century skill to improve their performances. Typically ensembles perform three concerts outside the school day, usually in December, March and June. Students are expected to attend performances and any missed performance requires a written make up assignment.

Orchestra classes offer instruction in:

  • Cello
  • Double Bass (not electric bass guitar)
  • Viola
  • Violin

Band classes offer instruction in:

  • Baritone / Euphonium
  • Bassoon
  • Clarinet
  • Flute
  • French Horn
  • Oboe
  • Percussion (includes both drums and bells)
  • Saxophone
  • Trombone
  • Trumpet / Coronet
  • Tuba

Guitar and piano instruction are not offered in either band or orchestra classes. An exceptionally skilled piano student may play in orchestra as an accompanist.

Cadet Orchestra and Cadet Band

Most incoming sixth grade students qualify for Cadet Band or Cadet Orchestra. In these classes there is an emphasis on learning the fundamental technique of their instrument as well as ensemble playing, music reading and interpretation. This class is open to students with no experience on their instrument as well as those who have studied instrumental music in elementary school. Students who have prior experience are taught more advanced aspects of instrumental technique. Because the class is part of the regular school day we generally progress much faster than elementary instrumental music classes. One week of classes contains the equivalent instructional time of eight weeks instruction typically offered at most of the district’s elementary schools. In addition to providing more instructional time these classes offer a wider selection of instruments including some instruments with higher potential for college scholarships such as viola, double bass, bassoon French horn and tuba.

Advanced Orchestra and Advanced Band

Advanced Band and Advanced Orchestra build on the fundamental playing techniques taught in cadet classes with students leaning more advanced skills, more emphasis is placed on musical independence, expression and interpretation. Advanced Band and Advance Orchestra play more challenging music with higher technical and expressive demands.

Choir

The McClure Choir is a year-long class open to boys and girls in 6th-8th grade who want to sing in a group setting. Students learn and perform a variety of choral literature in conjunction with correct vocal technique, musicianship fundamentals and ensemble skills. Styles of music performed may include Classical, Broadway, Jazz, Pop, and World Music. Some performances take place outside of the school day, and the choir may participate in local and regional music festivals and contests. No prior singing experience is required to join the choir. Already experienced and more advanced singers will have an opportunity to pursue small-group and solo singing throughout the year.
